Winner of numerous prizes, the talented baritone Kewei Wang is earning a reputation as one of the most gifted performers of his generation. Upon his graduation from the Shanghai Conservatory in 1985, he came to the United States and obtained his Master of Music degree on full scholarship from the Juilliard School in 1989. As a member of the Juilliard Opera Center, he appeared as Vicar in Britten’s ALBERT HERRING and as Ananto in Menotti’s TAMU-TAMU.
 
Since 1987, Kewei Wang had won a series of vocal competitions in America. They include: 1st prize-Musicians Emergency Fund Competition, 1st prize-Baltimore Opera International Vocal Competition, 1st prize-Aspen Music Festival French Aria Competition, top prize-Liederkranz Society Competition and has also been awarded top prize from the Loren L. Zachary Society.
 
Kewei Wang has performed with opera companies and orchestras throughout the United States including appearances at the prestigious Aspen Music Festival where he sang the role of Dandini in Rossini’s LA CENERENTOLA, Figaro in Rossini’s IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA with the Westchester Opera Association, Enrico in Donizetti’s LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR with the Spokane Symphony, Lord Rocheford in Donizetti’s ANNA BOLENA with Seattle Opera, Egberto in Verdi’s AROLDO with the Los Angeles Concert Opera Assiciation, Il Conte di Luna in Verdi’s IL TROVATORE with the Buffalo Opera. He made his début with the Grand Theatre of Hong Kong Culture Centre singing the villains in Offenbach’s LES CONTES D’HOFFMAN and Mercello in Puccini’s LA BOHÈME. He also sang with the Singapore Lyric Opera as Dr. Falke in Strauss’s DIE FLEDERMAUS. In Taipei, he appeared as Alfio in Mascagni’s CAVA-LLERIA RUSTICANA and Silvio in Leoncavallo’s I PAGLIACCI with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra. With the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Kewei Wang sang the roles of Rigoletto in Verdi’s RIGOLETTO, Marcello in Puccini’s LA BOHÈME and Figaro in Rossini’s IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA. His concert appearances include the New York City Orchestra at Lincoln Center’s Avery  Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall. He took part in the BEL CANTO tour in major cities of America and Canada which were organized by the Columbia Artists Management Inc. He also sang in the OLYMPIC PEACE CONCERT held as part of the Olympic Summer Games in Seoul, Korea in 1988.
 
During his studies at Juilliard, he participated in Luciano Pavarotti and Leontyne Price’s Master’s Classes, and his outstanding performances in those series were selected for broadcast on television. In August 1993, Kewei Wang was appearing at the Spoletto Festival in Italy when he was invited by Mr. Pavarotti to study with him in Pesaro; and their work se- ssion was featured on the famous CBS television program “60 Minutes”.
 
Kewei Wang was chosen to join the Zurich International Opera Studio in the 1994-1995 season, and he appeared there in their productions, including the Studio’s production of Ullman’s DER KAISER von ATLANTIS, a work banned by Nazi Regime and once  considered lost as well as in Darius Milhaud’s LE PAUVRE MATELOT. He also sang with the Zürich Opern Haus in performances of Gounod’s ROMÉO et JULIETTE and Verdi’s RIGOLETTO. After the Studio, he was engaged with the St. Gallen Opera. In this theater, he performed the roles of Belcore in Donizetti’s L’ELISIR D’AMORE, Gugliemo in Mozart’s COSI FAN TUTTE and Manuel in de Falla’s LA VIDA BREVE.
 
In August 2000, Kewei Wang’ s been invited to join the faculty of Music Department of Soochow University in Taiwan, and in the meanwhile, he keeps traveling between Asia and the U.S. to perform as a guest artist.
